After being away for a couple of years learning new skills, Hilary rejoined us as Admin and front of house in November 2023.

With many years’ experience in a variety of office situations, she is always happy to welcome visitors or callers to the office and get you through to the right person.
Away from work, Hilary enjoys pottery, walking, reading and following Motherwell FC and Newcastle Utd.

Karen Smith

Many of you will recognise Karen from her role as our Office Administrator. In 2023 she changed direction to become our newest Trainee Accounts Assistant, having been interested in the work that we do and wanting to understand more about it.

Since then, she has been undergoing in-house training and is carrying out all the aspects of this new position to a very high standard.

Luke MacLean, Graduate Apprentice/Trainee CA

Luke is our newest trainee and has joined us as a graduate apprentice after finishing his Highers at Peebles High School. This is a five year accredited work-based learning programme combining an honours degree from Aberdeen’s Robert Gordon University with the ICAS Chartered Accountant qualification. Luke was with us for some work experience while at school, and it has been his ambition to become a Chartered Accountant. We are pleased to be able to help him achieve this in Peebles.

Luke is also a talented footballer and plays for local club Peebles Rovers.

Susan Learmond M.A (Hons)

Susan joined us in 2021 after spending many years running her own business as a Childminder. She understands the challenges and demands of running your own business. She also worked in various roles with Lothian and Borders Police. She graduated from Heriot Watt University in 2001 with a degree in Management and Business Law. She always wanted to work in Accountancy and is now studying towards her AAT qualification. Susan enjoys walking her dog Maple, and spending quality time with her family.

Lauren Cormack AAT

Lauren has been a dedicated colleague of ours us since 2011. She trained and qualified as an Accounting Technician and has a wealth of experience to help our clients and other team members. Looking after clients’ accounts, corporate and personal tax and VAT she looks after our clients compliance work and is involved with a variety of accountancy and tax work.

Outside the office Lauren enjoys keeping fit and Munro bagging on a weekend with her family friends and dog, Fergie.

Colin Shaw BEng. CA

Colin obtained a Chemical Engineering degree from Heriot Watt University and made the bold step of changing career to accountancy. He was our first Apprentice C.A., joining in 2016. He qualified as a C.A. with first time passes in his exams in 2019. Colin specialises in accounts preparation, corporate and personal tax work. His engineering background and problem solving ability adds to the team’s versatility and strength.

Gillian Moran B.A (Hons). FCCA

Our longest serving colleague, Gillian, joined in 2009 after training with an Edinburgh firm and completed her professional qualification with us. She graduated from Stirling University in 2005 with a degree in Marketing and Business Studies. She spent a year studying at the University Of Kansas School Of Business, which was a great experience.

Gillian enjoys Accounts Preparation, Corporate and Personal Tax work and helping train clients with digital and cloud accounting. She has also been instrumental in training our new C.A. student.

Outside of office work, Gillian is a Special Constable with Police Scotland in Edinburgh and enjoys playing tennis and golf.

John Dunney CTA

John is a qualified Chartered Tax Advisor and Ex-Inspector of Taxes with HM Revenue & Customs and so has encountered most business and tax issues from both sides of the divide, for corporates, SME’s and individuals.

This experience has enabled him to assist clients minimise their exposure to all taxes in a wide range of circumstances, largely through streamlining business structures. Working with property owners has helped reduce families overall Income Tax exposure, whilst mitigating, or eliminating exposure to Capital Gains Tax, LBTT & ADS.

As a result of such planning, businesses and assets can be preserved for future generations, largely with a focus on reducing or eliminating future Inheritance Tax liabilities.

John is aligned with the Braidwood Graham philosophy that client care is fundamental to providing an excellent level of service and focuses on building close working relationships with clients, as he considers this crucial to securing this objective.

In his spare time John enjoys reading, cooking and walking his dog.

Jennifer Redfern AAT CA

Jennifer is a Chartered Accountant with over 30 years’ experience working within the Scottish Borders in general accountancy practice. She joined Braidwood Graham as an Associate in 2011, became a Director in 2017 and in 2023 was appointed Managing Director in conjunction with Braidwood Graham becoming an Employee Ownership Trust.

Jennifer believes clients appreciate a tailored, professional and friendly approach to working relationships. Building and maintaining this type of relationship is central to Braidwood Graham’s philosophy.

The transfer of Braidwood Graham to an Employee Ownership Trust demonstrates the commitment and confidence she has in our team; providing a professional service to our clients across a wide spectrum of accountancy and taxation areas.

During her free-time Jennifer enjoys using her knowledge to help local charities. Her hobbies include DIY, photography and walking.
